Most guides to buying a table lamp talk about wattage and call it a day. That's the least interesting part of the decision. Here's what actually determines whether a lamp earns its place on your side table for the next decade — or gets swapped out in a year.
1. Start with the light temperature, not the shade
Warm light (around 2700K) is what makes a room feel like it's exhaling — it's the temperature of candlelight and sunset, and it's almost always the right choice for a living room, bedroom, or reading corner. Cool white (4000K+) belongs in kitchens and workspaces, not places you want to relax. If you only remember one number from this guide, make it 2700K.
2. Think about where the light lands, not just where the lamp sits
A table lamp isn't lighting the room — it's lighting the six feet around it. Before you buy, look at the surface you're planning to put it on: is it near where you sit in the evening? Does it throw light up a wall, across a shelf, onto a face? The best lamps do something specific to the space around them, not just "provide light."
3. Consider what it looks like switched off
This is the one most buying guides skip entirely, and it's the one that matters most day to day. A lamp is off far more hours than it's on. If the form doesn't hold your attention unlit — if it just disappears into "beige object on a table" — you'll stop seeing it within a week. Sculptural lamps, the kind with texture and shape built into the shell itself, earn their place on the table even at noon.
4. Match scale to the surface, not the room
A common mistake: buying a lamp sized for the room instead of the table it sits on. As a rough rule, the lamp (base to top of shade) should be roughly 1.5x the height of what it's sitting on. A lamp that towers over a side table looks like it wandered in from somewhere else.
5. Ask what happens when something breaks
Bulbs burn out. Cords fray eventually. A lamp built to be repaired — standard bulb socket, replaceable cord, a shell that can take a knock — outlasts one that has to be thrown out the moment one part fails. It's worth asking before you buy, not after.
